How does the call for abstracts work?
The call for abstracts is a competitive process. Abstracts received will be de-identified before being assessed and ranked against selection criteria drawn up by the scientific committee (comprised of representatives of CSIRO, ACNEM and NSA). In order to be considered, abstracts must represent original and new, important or clinically relevant nutritional science, research, application or public health relating to one or more of the themes of the conference.
Successful applicants will be offered the opportunity to present either; 1) a poster or 2) a short oral Powerpoint presentation of about 10 minutes in the scientific stream of the concurrent (break-out) sessions. The best abstracts will be selected for a 10 minute oral presentation in a plenary session (to the whole conference).
Posters will be displayed on boards in an allocated area for the entire conference. Poster presenters are expected to stand beside their posters during allocated times on both Saturday 5th May and Sunday 6th May to discuss with, and answer questions from, delegates. Oral presenters may optionally also present a poster if desired.
On receiving notification of acceptance, abstract and poster presenters must register to attend the conference. This is a condition of acceptance. Abstracts and posters must be presented by one of the listed authors and any costs of presenting including conference registration, travel and accommodation are the responsibility of the presenter, except where a student scholarship may cover certain costs.
Submission of an abstract or other work confers permission to publish it in the official conference proceedings and related publications.
Abstract and poster prizes
Two awards will be given during the closing plenary session of the conference to the best oral and poster presenters, as adjudicated by the scientific committee:
- Best Abstract Presenter - for the best oral abstract and presentation
- Best Poster Presenter - for the best poster and poster presentation
Instructions for preparation of posters
Posters will generally be A0 in size (841mm x 1189mm), not larger, in either landscape or portrait format, and follow the usual guidelines for scientific posters available from most academic institutions, however some flexibility is available. For an entertaining example, see http://www.swarthmore.edu/NatSci/cpurrin1/posteradvice.htm)
Posters are usually printed in full-colour, can be printed on paper or fabric, can be laminated, etc, and will be fixed to the display board by hook and loop ‘velcro’ fasteners. Poster presenters should bring the poster to the conference venue with them and display it in the allocated area by 5pm Friday 4th May.

Student Scholarships
A number of scholarships are available to under-graduate and post-graduate students (not post-doctoral fellows) including medical students, GP/hospital registrars, nutritional science and research students, public health students and students of other healthcare disciples such as naturopathy, to attend the conference free of charge. This demonstrates the commitment of the convenors to encourage and reward academic excellence in nutritional science, research and clinical application.
Available scholarships include:
- Conference Registration, Travel and Accommodation
Full conference registration, conference dinner and pre/post conference workshop registration, free accommodation and free travel within Australia and New Zealand. (2 available)
- Conference Registration
Full conference registration, conference dinner and pre/post conference workshop registration (4 available)
Students wishing to be considered for a scholarship must indicate this on the necessary abstract/scholarship submission form which can be downloaded from here. Students may also be considered for a scholarship without submitting an abstract, by instead submitting an original piece of work (between 1500-2500 words) suitable for publication, such as an article, case study or discussion, addressing nutritional science, research, clinical application or public health/prevention and relating to one or more of the conference themes.
Students wishing to submit an article rather than an abstract are advised to make contact with the conference organisers to discuss the suitability of their intended topic at info@nutritionmedicine.org.au or phone +61 3 9597 0363.
Recipients of student scholarships may be requested to assist the conference organisers with some tasks during the conference, such as assisting at the registration desk, or assisting with assembly of the delegate bags.
